How To Be Single Movie Review
Hello beautiful people,
On Saturday night I decided to have a pre valentines date with my other single friend and went to see the romantic comedy How To Be Single at the Pacific Theatre at the Grove in Los Angeles. The movie has an impressive cast list with actress Dakota Johnson as the lead role Alice and Rebel Wilson playing the other lead role of Robin. The list of actors continues with appearance's from Leslie Mann, Damon Wayans Jr and Anders Holm. The movie is directed by Christian Ditter and written by Liz Tuccillo, who also wrote the story He's Just Not That Into You.
The story takes place in New York City and follows the life of Alice who is recently single and wants to find some adventure in her life as she hasn't been single for a long time. She is befriended by fun loving single girl Robin who shows her the ropes to being single successfully. This includes partying, casually sleeping with as many men as possible and having A LOT of carefree fun. At the same time other single characters are introduced and their ideas on single life and love take a turn causing change of hearts and love affairs to unravel throughout the movie.
From the trailers I had quite high expectations of the movie and especially after seeing that Rebel Wilson would playing the lead role. I have always been a huge fan of both Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann, so when I saw that they would be in the movie I was adamant that I definitely going to see it. Rebel Wilson played her usual care free, sexualized, crazy character, which was great, however, I wasn't too impressed with Fifty Shades actor Dakota Johnson. The character suited her as the sweet, inexperienced girl, however, I just found that throughout the movie she gave a very wooden performance and it was actually a little boring to watch. I found this to be the same in Fifty Shades, so I'm beginning to think that it is just her acting style. All the characters took on their usual roles, so I kind of knew what was going to happen already from the fact they were all playing their usual types. I have nothing against about types, being an actress myself in LA I am used to be being type casted (there's more of a variety in England than in LA) but I just felt that it would have suited the movie more to have a little more dynamic in actors, however, this is just my personal option.
As for the storyline, I thought it was pretty much predictable and didn't leave much for excitement. This is one of my biggest pet peeves when watching movies, if I can predict what is going to happen then I feel that the movie is completely pointless. There needs to be an element of surprise in order to keep the audience intrigued. I would rather not waste $15 to go to the movie theatre to watch something that I could have just read a synopsis to know what what is going to happen. Often people assume that because there is a popular cast list that this means the film must be good, but I definitely don't agree with this.
Overall, if I was to rate this movie I would give it two and a half stars. It is a fun film to watch, especially if you are single, but I definitely would not see it again.
